Basic Cat Training Commands
You can train your cat to listen to some basic commands even if you think this is impossible but it is important to train your cat on this level .It is known that cats are untrainable, but they learn to change their behavior and to respond to commands. Because cats are intelligent creatures and they can learn to act in a desirable way. Spend some time with your cat and bonding with him to gain cat’s trust and make training process easier.
You can train your cat to sit, come, and stay even not to scratch. When you try to teach your cat not to scratch, it can seem like it is pawing at you and it starts scratching you but it is not trying to hurt you, just your cat doesn’t realize that this is a bad thing what it was doing. If this happen just softly strokeits paw to help retract its claws and in a reassuring voice tell him that he is “a good kitty”. Do not give it food to show that this is expected of you r cat at all times, it is not a trick. You have to work with the cat on this for a few weeks.
Handle your cat gently to ensure good behaviors. If you are rude with your cat this might show it that it is ok to bite scratch, and to be mean. Cats associate being rough with them with aggressive behaviors as they are finicky and they may bite at your hand, or scratch you. Use their toys to show its ok to scrat, bite, at their own toys. With your cat, If they scratch you while you are playing with them it is not their fault so do not discipline them for this action.
If you want to make your training process easier take your cat in a secluded room where there are no distractions and it would be better if it is before dinnertime because at that time your cat will do more willingly what you want to get its treat. So you should prepare some healthy treats to reward it in advance. Now you can teach your cat the first trick “stay”. Put the cat on a surface where you and your cat are eye to eye. When your cat begins to wander off, call out its name in a stern voice and firmly tell him to stay. Raise your hand up to say stop. When your cat does this, reinforce it to do it again by giving him a bite of the treat. Allow your cat to get distracted again and then tell him to stay. Do this about 4 to 5 minutes every day, 2 or 3 sessions.
After you can try “come” trick and you will find it easy if your cat is already taught to stay. The cat knows that when you are teaching him he will get something yummy as a reward. Start this when your cat is in another room, call its name, and say come in a playful voice. Always have a treat or something for him when the cat comes by you. This should be a fun loving game for both you and your cat.
Young cats are the easiest to train but with them training sessions should be no longer than 5 minutes. Otherwise the cat becomes irritable and uncooperative. Reward your pet, if they do what you have asked them and your training sessions on a positive note with hugs and treats. |
